1 Kings: Looking Forward (Part 4)

We’ve looked up. We’ve looked down. We’ve looked back. But one more crucial piece remains before we properly dive into the narrative of 1 Kings 1-11 together. We need to look forward, anticipating how we’ll start to see Jesus on the pages of this scroll, because, as Luke shares Jesus’ conversation with a couple of disciples on the road to Emmaus, we hear that ‘beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.’

Wonderfully, Jesus describes himself with stunning clarity earlier on in Luke’s gospel with the simple words:

Something greater than Solomon is here
— Luke 11:31

How are we to read 1 Kings 1-11? We’re to dig for gold, knowing ultimately that the gold is Christ himself. In the highs and lows of Solomon’s reign, we’re going to look for the ways that Christ is greater. We’re going to dig for the treasure that shows us Christ and his saving work. And we’re going to taste and see that in Christ we have the better wisdom, the better temple, the better mediator, and the better King.

And as we glimpse Christ’s glory, and taste what it looks like to live in his glorious kingdom, we’re praying that our hearts will be all the more thrilled to be His, and all the more devoted to Him.
