But Why Do You Have to Go?
Panic. Questions. Anxious Hearts.
And Jesus.
The one who sees, who knows and who speaks loving and authoritative assurance into this intimate gathering of friends. These friends who, despite being with Jesus for a long time, are struggling to make sense of his imminent departure and what that means for them.
Can’t we come with you now? How will we know the way? Can’t you just show us the Father, and then we’ll be ok? Why tell us what’s going on, and not the world?
Hear me, see me, trust me, says Jesus. Know that I am not leaving you alone. Know that this is the work of God. Know, and believe, that all that has happened and all that is to come is as it should be. It is, in fact, the glory of God.
Salvation is in hand but, more than that, an invitation and means to close, familial relationship with the Father. An intimacy, a peace, an interaction that goes beyond even this conversation in this upper room.
For these dear friends, and for us here now, we need Jesus to do all that he is describing in these verses. Through the now-hidden but soon-seen glory of this course of events, we gain all that we could possibly need and want. And so, let not our hearts be troubled as we trust this Jesus.
