Minds & Money

‘How much money have you got in your bank account?’ asks my eldest son from the backseat of the car. ‘Is it millions?’

I pause, wondering how we’ve given the impression that we might have this kind of sum. I track back over my recent spendings and then remember that we’ve just learnt how to play Monopoly Deal. Millions of pounds have been frequently changing hands.

As I move his financial perspective from millionaire to ministry family, we talk about how our love for Jesus changes the way we think about money, and how we spend it. As I’m thinking to myself that this has been a fruitful conversation, he asks when we might buy a Tesla like the family at the end of our street.

I pray on that the Lord would give further opportunity to point my sweet son to Jesus rather than cars, and love that even this conversation might be used by the Lord to shape a little heart and mind.

As we’ve been in the letter to the Philippians, it is our hearts and minds that are being moulded into a heavenly mindset as we dwell on Jesus, hear Paul’s heart and desires and see Christ-like ways being outworked in every area of life. Chapter 4 brings the heavenly mindset, which has been on display throughout the letter, to bear on our relationships, our thought-life and even our wallets.

In comparison to my tentative talk of millions and Teslas with my son, Paul makes it clear that an element of partnering with others in the gospel is through our money. It’s not simply to provide for the other person’s needs, it is for the giver’s benefit as well. He says that it will be ‘credited’ to their account, and he’s talking spiritual rather than financial credit. As we give, we gain and are encouraged in our Christ-like mindset as we see Him being exalted as a result.

We’re so grateful for the many who have financially partnered with us. We praise God for you, and pray that your accounts would be credited as a result through the encouragement you get from this podcast helping many to get their Bibles open, and encounter the Word of Life
