What does growth look like for you?
Ephesians 4 tells us that the Christian life isn’t static. We’re to grow to become more like Christ. And we’re to do this in the context of our local church families, as we speak the truth in love to one another.
But here’s the thing: whether your summer is already in full flow, it’s on the horizon, or you’re just on winter break (we see you Australian sisters!), growth can feel ever so stunted during the months that lie ahead. Usual Sunday rhythms fall by the way side with holidays in play, Bible study groups often break for the summer, and time with people can feel random at the best of times.
So what does it look like to grow over the next couple of months?
Firstly, we need to acknowledge that growth doesn’t happen by accident. If we want to nourish our souls this summer, growing to become more like Christ, and standing firm in the faith, rather than being blown here and there, we need to be intentional in that endeavour. Here are just a few thoughts to spur you on:
Consider meeting up with one or two others to read the Bible together. It’s not a formal Bible study, but a chance to work through a book of the Bible, and apply it together. We know lots of people who use the podcast in this way specifically over the summer months. Whether it’s in person, over the phone, or even just messaging your thoughts if you’re on holiday, it’s a priceless way to stay connected, deepening both friendship and faith whilst usual rhythms are on hold.
Commit with your Bible study group to memorise a portion of Scripture together. It doesn’t have to be long. But doing it with others not only keeps us accountable, but spurs us on to be talking about the things we’re learning together, even if the group isn’t meeting regularly.
Read a Christian book with others in your church family. Pick something that’s a managable and affordable read, encourage others to pick up a copy, and then get reading! Hosting a meet up or two during the summer is a brilliant way to get people talking about what they’re reading too.
Prioritise Sunday worship when you’re on holiday. Expose your family to different churches, encourage a different church with your presence, and remind yourself and others that worship doesn’t stop just because you’re on holiday.
Above all else, bring your heart to the Lord. Ask him to help you. Acknowledge your need for Him to be at work in you. And pray for the growth you want to see! The Lord is faithful. He sees you. He knows what the next few months hold. And he is wholly committed to your growth, using both your intentionality, and your circumstances to that end.
