What if Leviticus isn’t as boring as you think?

I wonder what comes to mind when you think of Leviticus? For most of us, it lies in that dusty corner of our Bible that feels a little too foreign, and boring for our liking. 

Whether it’s words detailing the right way to sacrifice a bull or goat, words talking about bodily fluids and diseases, or list upon list of what we can and can’t do, it’s not long before our minds wander and we wonder what on earth we’re doing here. 

Surely the psalmist can’t have meant this book when he talked of delighting and meditating on the law of the Lord night and day?

Or could he?

Here’s a helpful rule of thumb: if a book of the Bible feels particularly foreign, boring or irrelevant, rather than questioning why it’s been included, why not ask yourself what you’re missing?

You see, as we study Leviticus, we’re committing ourselves to curiosity.  We’re committing ourselves to digging deeper than to what’s just on the surface.  And we’re acknowledging that we can only do this journey into such foreign, dusty lands with the Holy Spirit’s help, as he ‘opens our eyes to see wonderful things in his law.’

Imagine if you prayed that prayer each time you opened up Leviticus over the next few weeks? I wonder whether you might just discover that Leviticus isn’t as boring as you think…
