You nearly skipped Leviticus didn’t you?
Before you switch off at the mention of skin diseases and sacrifices, here are five questions to ask yourself:
Do you want to know God more deeply? Cue Leviticus. You may have heard it’s just a bunch of rules. But really, this is a book that reveals God’s heart, and his desire for a relationship with his people. He wants to meet with us. Did you hear that? He wants to meet with you. Rather than pushing you away, His heart is inclined towards you, and his posture is one of beckoning you to come.
Do you want to understand the cross more fully? Leviticus will show you. You see, it’s in Leviticus that we have the whole sacrificial and priestly system laid out for us. The rest of the Old Testament flows from it. And Christ’s arrival on the scene as ‘the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’ only makes sense in light of it. The deeper you dig into Leviticus, the more breathtaking Calvary becomes.
Do you wonder what God really thinks about women? Leviticus is the place for you. Lay aside your preconceptions, because in a wider culture that often dismissed and overlooked women, the laws in Leviticus are going to reveal just how much God values, upholds, protects and cares for them.
Do you want to love people better? “Love your neighbour as yourself” didn’t begin in the New Testament. It began here. This is a book that’s going to show you the full floor of loving others, and just how distinctly beautiful it is to do so.
And finally, do you want to love the Lord more? Leviticus will gently lead you there. As you see God’s heart. As you see his gracious provision to deal with sin. As you see his values. As you begin to feel the full weight of his unrelenting pursuit of his people. And as you see that it all stems from his extravagant and abundant love for people like you and me.
